Amy Adams is a different person — actually, a different species — in her new movie, Nightbitch.

The first trailer was released Tuesday for the film adaptation of Rachel Yoder's novel about an unfulfilled stay-at-home mom who begins transforming into a dog — literally. Adams' formerly ambitious artist who now takes care of her son full-time begins to grow more hair and her teeth begin to sharpen. She eats food like a hungry dog chowing down from its bowl.

Along the way, Adams's character, known in the book simply as Mother, is told simply that motherhood connects women to some primal urges. She's unsatisfied with that answer.

"Do you ever feel like the big secret is that we are gods?" Adams asks over one scene. "We f---ing create life. We are so powerful."

She observes, "I could crush a walnut with my vagina."

Though the film doesn't arrive in theaters until December, Adams has already landed a major award for her performance. In June, she was named this year's recipient of the Toronto International Film Festival's TIFF Tribute Performer Award, in recognition of her entire body of work, though it's tied to her Nightbitch portrayal. Since 2019, when accolade was first given out, though, it has been bestowed upon actors later recognized by the Academy Awards.

Adams herself has been nominated for six Oscars, for her performances in Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle, and Vice.

It's directed and written for the screen by Marielle Heller, who previously wrote and directed Melissa McCarthy drama Can You Ever Forgive Me? and the Tom Hanks-starring Fred Rogers story A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
