Full Metal Jacket star Matthew Modine criticizes Donald Trump for using film as 'tool of propaganda'
Published on December 13, 2025 EDT

Don't mess with Matthew Modine. Following Donald Trump's use of clips from Full Metal Jacket in a new military-focused campaign ad, the star of Stanley Kubrick's seminal war film has some harsh words for the former president, comparing him to no less infamous a figure than Adolf Hitler.

"In the 1930s, Leni Riefenstahl directed the Nazi propaganda films Triumph of the Will and Olympia," Modine tells Entertainment Weekly in an emailed statement when asked for comment on the Trump ad. "These two films are considered among the most effective propaganda ever made. Riefenstahl denied any knowledge of the Holocaust, repeatedly invoking the 'how could we have known?' defense."

Modine continues, "ironically, Trump has twisted and profoundly distorted Kubrick's powerful anti-war film into a perverse, homophobic, and manipulative tool of propaganda."

Representatives for Warner Bros. and the Kubrick estate did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

Originally released in 1987 and adapted from the book The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford, Full Metal Jacket dramatizes the horrors of the American military during the Vietnam War. It begins at boot camp, where the strict drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) relentlessly bullies new recruits into conformity and obedience. Modine stars as Private Joker, one of those recruits.

A rep for Vincent D'Onofrio, who also stars in the film as Pvt. Leonard "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence, a main target of Hartman's bullying, told EW that "he did not provide any consent for this usage by the Trump Campaign."

The early scenes of Ermey's equally horrifying and hilarious performance are the most well-known parts of Full Metal Jacket, and are the ones sampled in Trump's new campaign ad.

"We will not have a woke military!" Trump wrote in a tweet of the ad video, which equates the Ermey character with Trump himself. This is contrasted with clips, apparently taken from TikTok, of modern military service-members dancing in drag. In reference to Trump's infamous political motto, the ad ends with the declaration, "Let's make our military great again."

Full Metal Jacket makes clear that Hartman's authoritarianism is not particularly effective (he himself meets a violent end, and many of his Marines-in-training go on to be killed by the Viet Cong) in addition to being cruel and inhuman. However, the filmmaker's daughter Vivian Kubrick weighed in on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that her father would have supported Trump's use of the Full Metal Jacket footage.

"I feel very confident he would be a Trump supporter and would forgive using FMJ incongruously, if it helps the cause of freedom!" she wrote.

Modine does not put forward any particular analysis of the film, but rather says that Trump using these clips this way is proof that his second term would be equivalent to the Nazis' reign of terror.

"Shortly before Riefenstahl died, she acknowledged her connection to Adolf Hitler in a BBC interview. 'I was one of millions who thought Hitler had all the answers. We saw only the good things; we didn't know bad things were to come,'" Modine says. "It is no exaggeration to see Trump's reflection in the terrible figure Hitler was. Please listen to Riefenstahl's final warning: '...we didn't know how bad things were to become.' Trump has shown us who he is and made no secret of what he intends to do."
