SNL star Kyle Mooney's directorial debut
Published on December 13, 2025 EDT

The upcoming movie Y2K is as '90s as its name implies.

The new trailer for Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Mooney's directorial debut (below) includes flashes of a VHS of the football movie Varsity Blues, iconic Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone, and AOL's signature "You've got mail!" internet greeting, all set to the sound of Chumbawamba's massively popular "Tubthumping."

While it starts out looking like Can't Hardly Wait or even American Pie, it quickly morphs into Scream. There's also a hint of Superbad mixed in. (The 2007 film's star Jonah Hill is a producer on Y2K.)

The official synopsis: "On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy."

The horror comedy also features fire, colliding airplanes, bong hits, and robots, because in Y2K, the world's computer systems have both melted down and risen up at the dawn of the new millennium.

Along with Silverstone, the movie's cast includes Rachel Zegler (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) Jaedeen Martell (It), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Daniel Zolghardi (Eighth Grade), Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), and Mooney. Limp Bizkit lead singer Fred Durst appears too.

Mooney departed SNL in 2022, the same year as Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, and Kate McKinnon. It was one of the biggest shake-ups the show's audience had seen in years.

He was last seen acting in Jerry Seinfeld's Pop-Tarts movie, Unfrosted, which came out earlier this year. In 2022, he appeared Jennifer Lawrence movie No Hard Feelings.

His Y2K hits theaters Dec. 6.
