FridayIce Cube says fourth

Ice Cube’s fourth Friday movie is finally thawing out.

In an interview with Flavor Flav’s Flavor of the Week on SiriusXM, the Boyz n the Hood star said that a new installment of his hit comedy movie series is moving forward thanks to executive turnover at Warner Bros.

“We’re working on it,” Cube confirmed. “We finally got some traction with Warner Bros. They have new leadership, my man Mike De Luca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Player’s Club, and All About the Benjamins, you know, Mike De Luca was there.”

Reps for Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

Cube said that De Luca’s support was the missing piece in the Friday 4 puzzle. “So now he’s running Warner Bros., and he’s like, you know him and my man Michael Gruber [are] like, ‘What the f--- ‘s going on with Friday, man? Let’s get this s--- back online!’”

However, the rapper noted that he’s not completely elated by the situation, as three key cast members from the series have died in the period since Friday After Next was released in 2002. “I was a little hot because they’d took so long because, you know, John Witherspoon passed away, Tiny passed away, A.J. Johnson passed away,” he said. “Like, man, we keep losing people and y’all keep dickin’ around, not doing the movie the way it needed to be done.” Indeed, Witherspoon, who portrayed Ice Cube’s father Willie in all three prior movies, died in 2019; Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr., who played antagonist Deebo in the original Friday and Next Friday, died in 2020; and Anthony “A.J.” Johnson, the actor behind thief Ezal in the first movie, died in 2021.

“They wanna do it, but the key is, it’s gotta be done right, Flav, or we shouldn’t f--- with it,” Cube continued. “So they finally came to their senses. So hopefully we can get in the process of getting that movie made.”

After charismatic appearances in films like Boyz n the Hood and Higher Learning, Friday helped solidify Ice Cube as a bonafide movie star and as a cinematic storyteller — he wrote the screenplay for the movie alongside DJ Pooh, and had sole screenwriting credits on the sequels, 2000’s Next Friday and 2002’s Friday After Next.

The film also helped launch Chris Tucker’s career as a leading man, though he didn’t return for either of the sequels. In 2017, Cube said that he hopes to bring Tucker back into the fold for the final chapter. “We’re still trying to get Chris to do it,” he said. “I can’t make Chris do it, but fans can hit him up.”
