JokerMargot Robbie hasn't talked to Lady Gaga about Harley Quinn in
Published on January 15, 2026 EDT "She's going to crush it," the "Barbie" star said at the Golden Globes of Gaga inheriting the DC villain role.

Margot Robbie is showing Lady Gaga her poker face when it comes to trading secrets of playing iconic DC villainess Harley Quinn.

As the Oscar-winning singer-songwriter prepares to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in director Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux in October, Robbie — who previously portrayed Quinn in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021) — revealed Sunday at the 2024 Golden Globes that she hasn't yet spoken to Gaga about passing the baton for the upcoming Joker sequel.

"Oh my God, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding? She’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see it," she told Variety on the red carpet.

When asked if she's contacted Gaga about the role, Robbie said the pair have not connected.

"I actually haven’t spoken to her about it," the Barbie star said. "I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for the surprise when I get to see the movie."

Robbie previously spoke to MTV News in October 2022 about Gaga taking on the role, noting that it made her "happy" to see other actresses bring the character to the big screen.

"I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way… like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor. Someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth," she said. "It's such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think [Gaga will] do something incredible with it."

Gaga joined the highly anticipated sequel in mid-2022, months after leading her second major Hollywood movie, 2021's House of Gucci, which she fronted three years after winning an Academy Award for writing the A Star Is Born soundtrack song "Shallow" in 2018.

Photos from the film's set show Gaga wearing an outfit that recalls Harley's classic comic book outfit in a story that's believed to be a musical that follows the Joker (Phoenix) and Harley as they forge a complicated romance in Arkham Asylum. Its subtitle, Folie à Deux, referencing a "shared psychosis."

In July 2023, cinematographer Lawrence Sher revealed that Gaga wanted to be called "Lee" on the set of the film, seemingly to help her get into character.
