La Máquina, a Celia Cruz & Johnny Pacheco remaster, and Hannah Gadsby's new show top this week's Must List
Published on December 01, 2025 EDT

I love fantastic prestige TV. But man, I also love any show that dares to give us a "bee-nado." I'm a disaster movie superfan (Team Dante's Peak, if you're wondering), so when 9-1-1 premiered six years ago, I knew it was for me — with its pulse-raising action and campy craziness grounded by performances from the likes of Angela Bassett and Peter Krause. Following a season 8 opener that gave us 22 million killer bees, the past two weeks served up a plane catastrophe that had me on the brink of tears for one reason or another throughout. I'm bummed the flame is dying out on spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star after its current fifth season on Fox, but thankful the mothership burns bright on ABC. —Patrick Gomez, Editor-in-Chief

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna reunite in this darkly funny, surreal Spanish-language drama about an aging boxer and his loquacious manager/best friend. An embarrassing loss leaves Eduardo "La Máquina" Osuna (Bernal) ready to retire from the ring, but his manager, Andy (Luna, hidden under prosthetics), pressures him into a rematch. Alas, they must also defeat a shadowy boxing cabal — along with Eduardo's CTE-fueled hallucinations. Suspenseful and strange in all the best ways, La Máquina is a contender for one of the best shows of the year. —Kristen Baldwin, TV Critic
