American Horror Story star Lily Rabe recalls shooting 'really intense' spanking scene that ultimately got cut

Lily Rabe has made many memories while filming American Horror Story — but only one of them has haunted Jesse Tyler Ferguson for over a decade.

The longtime friends recently reunited for an episode of Ferguson's Dinner's On Me podcast, where they reminisced about the last time they shared a meal together. The way Ferguson recalls it, Rabe arrived to dinner still reeling after filming a "really intense" scene of the horror show’s second season, Asylum, which happened to involve her character getting "spanked.”

"You got you got to dinner, like, 'Oh my god. I had the craziest day at work,'" Ferguson recalled. "You described the scene to me and I was like, 'Oh my god, Lily.' You were just like, 'They had me crying all day' and you had to do several setups of it and you did it several times. And then, while we were at dinner, you got a phone call from production that you had to reshoot that scene. Do you remember this?"

As for Rabe’s memory of the scene? "I might have been just bent over with my butt out being hit," she shared. "We shot it really early because it was full butt."

Unfortunately, Ferguson’s memory of their dinner interruption was accurate. Rabe said she was called back to reshoot the scene "because of a technical situation," and jokingly clarified, "My butt was perfect. It had nothing to do with my butt."

Fans of American Horror Story: Asylum won’t be too scandalized by the cut spanking scene — beyond being a plausible incident, spanking was a common occurrence in the show’s sophomore outing. The second season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology threw viewers into the deeply disturbing world of Briarcliff Manor, a mental asylum run by James Cromwell’s Dr. Arthur Arden, a Nazi war criminal turned sinister physician, and Jessica Lange’s Sister Jude Martin, the stern head nun with a penchant for corporal punishment.

Rabe has come a long way since playing the easily manipulated Sister Mary Eunice in 2011. She went on to star in the next five seasons of the anthology series, before taking a short break from the franchise in season 7. She then appeared in the two-part season 10 as Doris Gardner in Part One: Red Tide and Amelia Earhart in Part Two: Death Valley.

Rabe can currently be seen on the Apple TV+ legal series Presumed Innocent, based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel of the same name. The series stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Chicago prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who becomes the prime suspect in a high-profile murder case. Rabe stars as Dr. Liz Rush, the therapist of Rusty and wife Barbara (Ruth Negga). Since concluding in July, the limited series has been expanded for another season, which will revolve around a new case — though it's unclear if season 1 stars will be reprising their roles.

You can hear more from Rabe in the full podcast episode above.
