Emmys tribute to TV moms brings out Meredith Baxter, Connie Britton, and Susan Kelechi Watson

After the TV dads got their due at the Emmys on Sunday night, the TV moms rolled out on stage.

Three such ladies — actors Meredith Baxter, Connie Britton, and Susan Kelechi Watson — united during the big awards ceremony to announce the winner of Best Writing in a Comedy Series. Notably, Baxter played Elyse Keaton on Family Ties, Britton played Tammi Taylor on Friday Night Lights, and Watson played Beth Pearson on This Is Us.

The Emmys ceremony seemed to foreshadow their arrival when Reba vets Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman arrived on stage earlier in the show to McEntire's song "I'm a Survivor," with its lyrics "a single mom who works two jobs."

"We have come a long way," Baxter acknowledged, noting how decades earlier, "We were lucky enough to leave the kitchen."

These days, Britton said, "We can be a country music star" and "the head of a haunted household," referring to her roles on Nashville and American Horror Story.

Watson acknowledged that TV moms are "no longer one-dimensional," and that it's okay for them to "ask for as much money as a TV dad."

"None of this would be possible without the contributions of great TV writers," Britton added, before the trio presented the comedy writing award, which went to Hacks. Scribes Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky came out on stage to accept the honor on behalf of the episode "Bulletproof."

The Emmys ceremony paid tribute to a variety of character categories, including TV villains. One such segment saw TV dads George Lopez (George Lopez), Damon Wayans (My Wife and Kids), and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) appear on stage in a "man cave" set.
