Stephen Colbert's wife Evelyn admits she doesn't watch his talk show every night: 'Oops'

Not even Stephen Colbert’s wife can keep up with all of The Late Show’s episodes.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly and PEOPLE on the Emmys red carpet on Sunday, Evelyn McGee-Colbert revealed that she employs a few tricks to try to stay up to date with her husband’s late-night talk show.

“I don’t watch every night,” she admitted. “I, you know, catch up on Fridays.”

Stephen noted that his wife is someone who “gets up early every morning, unlike her husband,” which may explain why she tunes in at a later date given the show’s 11:35 p.m. start time. Her delayed viewing, however, does lead to some hilariously awkward conversations between the pair.

"Sometimes she’ll say, ‘Oh here’s this news story, you guys should make jokes about that.' I’m like, ‘We did last night, you should check it out,’” Stephen teased. “Pretty good show.”

To which Evelyn simply replied, “Oops.”

The show is so good, in fact, that The Late Show was nominated for Outstanding Talk Series at the Emmys this year. While the award ultimately went to The Daily Show, Stephen — who starred on the show from 1997 until 2005 — appeared overjoyed by the announcement at the event, standing up and pulling host Jon Stewart into a hug.

While chatting on the red carpet, Stephen also reflected on his recent Entertainment Weekly cover story and revealed the most treasured knickknack that resides in his Late Show office.

“My favorite is probably part of the set from The Lord of the Rings, where Frodo sails off at the end. That’s called the Grey Havens," Stephen, a proud J.R.R. Tolkien fan, explained. "[Director] Peter Jackson snapped off one of the towers and gave it to me as a present. That’s it. I have it in a little crystal dome in my office.”
