If you want to yell obscenities at Chappell Roan, well, good luck, babe!

On the MTV Video Music Awards 2024 red carpet, things got heated when a photographer in the corral could be heard yelling "shut the f--- up" in the vicinity of the singer.

Videos from the carpet show the "Hot to Go!" songstress then replying, "You shut the f--- up." It's unclear what was said immediately after, or what kicked off the initial exchange, but Roan can be seen in clips pointing her finger at someone and adding, "Don't. Not me, bitch." Roan then gathered herself and move on from the red carpet into the awards show.

"It's just quite overwhelming and quite scary," Roan later said in a red-carpet interview with ET. "I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying. And I yelled back. I yelled baaaack — you don't get to yell at me like that."

The red carpet incident comes just weeks after Roan clapped back at inappropriate behavior from fans. In an Instagram post dated Aug. 23, she wrote, "For the past 10 years I've been going nonstop to build my project, and it's come to the point that I need to draw lines and set boundaries. I want to be an artist for a very, very long time. I've been in too many nonconsensual physical and social interactions, and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don't owe you s---. I chose this career path because I love music and art and honoring my inner child. I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it."

Though Roan explained that being at work events means her being in "work mode," in any other setting she is "clocked out." "I don't agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out — just because they're expressing admiration," she added. "Women do not owe you a reason why they don't want to be touched or talked to."

This year's awards show marks the first VMAs for Roan, whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz. Roan is set to perform, and is up for four nominations in the categories of Best New Artist, PUSH: Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Best Trending Video for “Hot to Go!,” and Song Of Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”
