Sex and the CityMatthew Broderick wishes he'd been on

When Matthew Broderick looks back at all the movies and shows that he's worked on over the years, he regrets not doing Sex and the City, the HBO series that starred his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker.

"I wish that I had done it or been in it," Broderick said Wednesday on SiriusXM's This Life of Mine with James Corden. "You know, that was her, her thing... I don't know. It just never worked out. I loved that show and I would have been delighted to be in it, but it just never lined up right."

The Ferris Bueller's Day Off star confirms in the video below that he was offered roles on it over the years. After all, he's been in Parker's life for decades. They married in 1997, before the hilarious and heartfelt comedy about four stylish friends dating in the city began its six-season run, from 1998 to 2004.

"It's a little bit true," he told Corden about the story that he had declined multiple roles. "You know, I don't even know that I remember that well. Whenever there was a part that I could do, I couldn't do it is really all that happened."

Sometimes, though, he said no because of the character and not his schedule.

"But also sometimes it was like, 'Do you want to do two days as the premature ejaculator?' And I'd be, you know, 'Well, I don't know.'"

Those roles were "kind of embarrassing," the Broadway actor said.

Broderick noted in a March 2020 interview with the New York Times that he had declined that same part, which eventually went to Justin Theroux, who played writer Vaughn Wysel in the second season. "The premature ejaculator," Broderick told the newspaper. "Think of that decision I had to make."

After Corden asked whether Broderick had been offered parts directly by his wife, who was also a producer on the series, Broderick said no. The offers came in a "very professional" way.

If Broderick is truly up for it, he can always campaign for a role in the Sex and the City sequel series, And Just Like That. While longtime fans of the adventures of Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) — Kim Cattrall's Samantha isn't part of AJLT — have seen many throwbacks to the original series, there have been plenty of new characters.
