It's What's Inside ending explained: Who ended up in whose body?
Published on March 04, 2026 EDT

Greg Jardin’s It’s What’s Inside is a twisted dark comedy about a group of college friends who reunite the night before one of their number’s weddings to drink, reminisce, and experiment with a black market body-swapping device. When the film premiered earlier this year at Sundance, Netflix snapped it up for a cool $17 million — one of the biggest sales in the history of the festival.

"Initially I was pitching it as The Big Chill meets Freaky Friday by way of Black Mirror," Jardin told IndieWire about his directorial debut. "When I initially came up with the idea, I saw it as a straight-up sci-fi comedy. And then as I was really working through it… I thought, maybe I can lean into a darker vibe but still be funny."

The engaging, loopy final result is a wild ride, though not a particularly accessible one. (We had to watch it twice just to hash out its various twists and turns.) As characters switch bodies back and forth faster than many of us take breaths, you may find yourself questioning who is who.

Here’s the ending of It’s What Inside, explained.

Jardin’s film follows seven college pals — Reuben (Devon Terrell), Dennis (Gavin Leatherwood), Nikki (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Brooke (Reina Hardesty), Maya (Nina Bloomgarden), as well as couple Shelby (Brittany O’Grady) and Cyrus (James Morosini) — who gather at Reuben’s house the night before his wedding for one last round of debauchery.

Also on the guest list is Forbes (David W. Thompson), a former wild child turned scientist whom the group hasn’t seen since college when he was expelled for bringing his underage sister, Beatrice (Madison Davenport), to a raucous party. Beatrice was obsessed with Dennis, who was then dating Nikki, and the mental torment of this sent her to a psychiatric hospital.

For those reasons, there’s understandably a bit of nervous tension around Forbes’ presence. And their anxieties do not dissipate when Forbes arrives with a mysterious machine he invented which allows users to body swap with one another. He convinces the group to play a game he often does with his laboratory co-workers which involves switching bodies and attempting to guess who is who.

The group quickly agrees to the idea, and a game commences wherein they try to out one another. As the rounds continue, though, each person realizes that possessing a different person has unexpected benefits. As some strive to stay in their new vessel for good, others are anxious to return to their true selves.

Things are going mostly fine for the group until Reuben and Brooke, occupying the bodies of Dennis and Maya, have sex on the home’s narrow top-story balcony (more of a perch, really) and fall to their deaths. As they always do, opinions differ on whether to involve the police. Forbes is particularly adamant that the authorities not get involved because he has no desire to relinquish his magical body-swapping device.

Dennis, livid that he’ll have to spend the rest of his life in Reuben’s body, reveals that Cyrus only dated Shelby because Nikki wouldn’t date him. Maya tells Shelby that Cyrus, pretending to be Forbes, tried to plant a kiss on her. Dennis calls the police and falsely reports that Cyrus murdered Dennis and Maya (whose bodies were controlled by Reuben and Brooke). Forbes makes a run for it with his device, but Shelby, in Nikki’s body, knocks him out.

Shelby then refuses to leave Nikki’s body, finding Nikki’s life as a traditionally attractive social media influencer preferable to her own. Shelby threatens to ruin Nikki’s career with an incriminating video if she pressures Forbes into switching them back. Shelby conspires with Cyrus, suggesting that he swap into Reuben’s body while she stays in Nikki’s body, allowing him to be with Nikki again in a way. Meanwhile, Dennis in Cyrus’ body will take the blame for the deaths.

Nikki and Dennis band together to get everyone back into their own bodies. As her first order of business, Nikki makes Shelby go into anaphylactic shock by giving her peanut butter and refusing to administer an EpiPen dose unless they switch back to their rightful bodies.

While that’s happening, Dennis sees that someone has transferred money out of his bank and into an untouchable offshore account. He turns on Cyrus, believing him responsible for the theft, and the two begin to physically fight. This triggers the device, which causes everyone to body swap just as the police come through the door.

The next morning, Beatrice arrives at the house to find Dennis in Forbes’ body. Beatrice then reveals that she was the real Forbes all along, having assumed his form to get revenge against Dennis and Nikki. Her brother had introduced the machine to Beatrice because he thought it would bring them closer together after the events that literally separated them, but instead “she’s been stewing, festering, waiting to get back… at everyone.”

Subsequently, Shelby and Cyrus have returned to their rightful bodies. Shelby goes to visit Cyrus in prison, where he’s serving a life sentence for the deaths of Dennis and Maya as well as the theft of Dennis’ money. Cyrus implores Shelby to speak to the police and tell them he’s innocent, but she refuses and he begins to question whether or not she’s the real Shelby. However, it is the real Shelby — she’s just unable and unwilling to help Cyrus after he kissed Maya.

It’s revealed that Beatrice, now in Nikki’s body, has escaped with Forbes’ body-swapping machine and all of Dennis’ money. Meanwhile, Forbes and Dennis plot how they might get the machine back. Might there be a sequel on the horizon? Stranger things have happened…
