Dan Levy must come to terms with a major loss in the City of Light in the new trailer for his upcoming dramedy, Good Grief.

In his directorial feature debut, the Schitt’s Creek actor stars as Marc, a children’s book illustrator whose life is forever changed when his charismatic husband, Oliver (Luke Evans), unexpectedly dies. A year after the tragedy, Marc invites his two supportive best friends, Sophie (Ruth Negga) and Thomas (Himesh Patel), on a soul-searching weekend trip to Paris because, he says, "we all deserve some joy."

After settling into their "sexy" lodgings, however, their relationships are put to the test as hard truths about love and grief rise to the surface.

"Oliver met someone else," Marc reveals, causing Sophie and Thomas to exchange horrified glances.

Thomas replies, "I'm sorry you're having to deal with that, but I'm allowed to feel things too."

Things get even more complicated when a new man asks Marc out for a drink.

But no matter what, he's got his friends at his side cheering him on. “We have been here for you,” Sophie tells him. “We built you the nest and we sat on it for a year: It’s time to hatch.”

The film, which was also written by Levy, rounds out its cast with Celia Imrie as Marc’s lawyer Imelda and Arnaud Valois as Theo, the guy Marc meets who reminds him it’s possible to find love again.

Speaking with EW earlier this week, Levy revealed that Good Grief was inspired in part by his own personal experience with grief.

"I lost my grandmother toward the tail end of the pandemic, and I was in a very strange headspace in terms of feeling the weight and the profound sense of tragedy of what the COVID pandemic had done for all of us, while at the same time trying to honor the passing of someone who meant so much to me," Levy said. "It was hard for me to feel the specificity of loss when all I was feeling was grief for so long. It was that conversation that really expedited the concept of the movie."

Good Grief lands in select theaters on Dec. 29 and premieres Jan. 5. on Netflix.
