Childhood pals and costars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna reunited at the 2024 Emmys to give the ceremony a Spanish flair.

Taking the stage to present the statuette for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology series or Movie category, García Bernal informed the crowd that they were told that the Emmys was "losing a big chunk of its audience," so he and Luna would be trying something that would "push the limits and raise the boundaries."

Luna then switched gears to Spanish. "Good evening. Welcome to the Emmys!" he said. "Hello to those who speak Spanish in the auditorium, and the more than 50 million people who speak Spanish in this country. We are here to present Best Direction of a Limited Series or Movie."

The Andor star and his pal presented the win to Ripley's Steven Zaillian, who bested nominees Weronika Tofilska (Baby Reindeer); Noah Hawley (Fargo); Gus Van Sant (Feud: Capote vs. the Swans); Millicent Shelton (Lessons in Chemistry); and Issa López (True Detective: Night Country).

The duo are set to headline the upcoming Hulu series La Máquina (premiering Oct. 9), about an aging boxer (García Bernal) whose manager and best friend (Luna) is determined to get him back on top. Eiza González also stars as García Bernal's ex-wife, a journalist who finds herself colliding with the dark side of the boxing world.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Luna said it "was beautiful to witness" the transformation of his costar, whom he first collaborated with on Alfonso Cuarón's 2001 film Y Tu Mamá También, into the fighter. "I really love boxing, and it was very nice getting fooled by the illusions. He was in the ring, and he was fighting. And he was definitely achieving everything that we discussed and that we dreamed about. You can tell he understands fighting."

Luna's transformation "heightened the state of everything," added García Bernal. "It made it so much more exciting and so much more interesting."

The 2024 Emmys is airing live on ABC from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
