M3GAN universe expands with erotic thriller
Published on January 15, 2026 EDT A love 'bot goes haywire and presumably kills people in this deeply necessary cinematic universe expansion.

For those inside the movie, more M3GAN means more problems. For the rest of us, it's a slay, queen.

Blumhouse revealed Thursday that, in addition to dropping the already-announced M3GAN sequel next year, the powers that be are also moving ahead with a spinoff that's described as a "thrilling and seductive" erotic thriller about a love 'bot that goes haywire. It doesn't feel like a coincidence either that the studio chose LGBTQ Pride Month to confirm that the campy horror movie all gay men seem to love is getting its own cinematic universe.

The new movie is called SOULM8TE. It's directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) and written by Rafael Jordan (Salvage Marines), based on a story he wrote with James Wan and Ingrid Bisu.

According to the official description, the film follows a man who acquires "an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless love 'bot into a deadly soulmate." It's said to be made in the tradition of 1990s domestic thrillers, but with a modern, technological twist.

"Fundamentally, I view this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness," Dolan said of SOULM8TE in a statement. "Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths."

Wan, meanwhile, called SOULM8TE "a thrilling and seductive addition to the M3GAN universe."

Allison Williams and Violet McGraw are reprising their roles from M3GAN in M3GAN 2.0, which is set to hit theaters on June 27, 2025. SOULM8TE will then come out six months later on Jan. 2, 2026. All we need after that is an Avengers-style M3GAN and SOULM8TE team-up — at the very least for a viral dance-off.
