The Last Thing He Told Me season 2, based on upcoming book sequel, is a go at Apple TV+
Published on April 20, 2026 EDT Jennifer Garner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Angourie Rice, and David Morse are set to reprise their roles for season 2.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't the last thing he told her.

A second season of The Last Thing He Told Me has been ordered at Apple TV+. The streamer announced the news Monday, revealing that the second season will be based on the newly announced sequel to the novel by Laura Dave, which is confirmed for publication in 2025 — ahead of the premiere of the new season on Apple TV+.

The first season, which was based on Dave's 2021 bestseller of the same name, was initially conceived of as a limited series. It followed Hannah (Jennifer Garner), a woodturner and happy newlywed who had to forge a relationship with her combative 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) in order to find the truth about why her husband, Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), mysteriously disappeared, leaving only a frustratingly short note that read, "Protect her," in his wake.

According to the streamer, The Last Thing He Told Me season 2 will expand the story of the book, with stars Garner, Coster-Waldau, Rice, and David Morse set to reprise their roles. Hailing once more from 20th Television and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine (a part of Candle Media), Aaron Zelman joins season 2 as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Josh Singer, with Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, and Garner also executive producing.

“Like so many people, I fell for Hannah on page one of Laura Dave's gripping novel,” Garner said in a statement. “The move to actor and producer from reader and super fan was delicious — and made even sweeter by collaborating with Laura, Josh, Reese, and everyone at Hello Sunshine, as well as the amazing teams at Apple and 20th. Being part of this group, not to mention part of such a stellar cast, was a career highlight for me. I’m thrilled to get to tell more of Hannah's story – I couldn't have said yes more quickly to season 2! These characters and their story mean so much to me, as I know they do to the many who have championed our show; we're excited to give audiences even more with this next chapter.”

Dave previously teased to Entertainment Weekly ahead of season 1's finale — which somewhat controversially sees Hannah decide to live apart from her on-the-lam hubby for the sake of his daughter — that, if there ever was a book sequel, Owen's reasons for leaving the way he did "will become clear."

"What I will say is, I had no intention of writing a sequel. I had no intention of it when I was writing the first one. It was closed for me," she said at the time. "Over time, and thinking about the way that readers have engaged so intensely with that last scene — in good and bad ways, people either love it or some people are like, 'How dare you not put them back together!' — I've been asked some questions around this in different capacities, and I started thinking about what the answers are. So now I don't know. I can imagine the world in which that sequel could come to be."
