Fantasia Barrino is still rolling on the same river that shot her to superstardom on season 3 of American Idol.

The Color Purple actress and recording artist took the 2024 Grammys stage on Sunday night to pay tribute to the late icon Tina Turner by performing the legendary singer's popular cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary."

The performance fell 20 years after Barrino first sang the song on national television on American Idol's third season in 2004. While standing in front of judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson, Barrino transitioned into a rendition of "Proud Mary" after initially singing the Fugees' "Killing Me Softly With His Song."

Abdul called Barrino a "wonderful singer" after she concluded the first song, and Cowell agreed — though the group told her that they wanted her to do another song to test her voice's versatility.

"Now that's what I'm talking about," Abdul said, and Cowell went on to call her "one of the best" singers the show had seen up to that point — and, he was right, as Barrino went on to win season 3.

At the 2024 Grammys, Barrino sang "Proud Mary" with an array of backup dancers clad in sparkly attire that recalled Turner's signature aesthetic. She eventually made her way into the crowd to interact with the A-listers sitting near the stage, and even prompted pop star Dua Lipa to dance with her during the song's climax.

Turner, who died in May 2023, was one of many music industry personalities the Grammys honored amid its latest In Memoriam segment, with Annie Lennox also taking the stage to honor Sinead O'Connor after Stevie Wonder opened the segment with a number in remembrance of Tony Bennett.
